Emotions, Neighbors, and Nation-State Identifications at Grassroots Memorials of to the Madrid Train Bombings After the March 11, 2004 terrorist attacks, railway stations on the “Corredor del Henares”, a commuter rail line in southern Madrid, served as public arenas for the expression of a range of emotions. This article analyzes one aspect of the emotional universe underlying the memorials at the stations: the ways in which contributors to these memorial shrines used references to nation-states as identifiers and territorial markers. The article focuses particularly on the emotions expressed by individuals who identified themselves with countries other than Spain, shedding light on the relationships between emotion and place of origin.
