About the journal

Founded in 1971 by Jean Cuisenier within the Centre d’Ethnologie Française, Ethnologie française made an early effort to break with the approach of the folklorists who dominated the analysis of social and cultural facts observed in France as well as in Europe at that time.

The review has been part of the editorial department of the Maison Archéologie & Ethnologie – René Ginouvès at the Université Paris Nanterre since 2008, becoming one of the most important French-language journals of general anthropology. Edited and managed by Martine Segalen from 2006 to 2017 and since 2017 by Nicolas Adell, the journal focuses primarily – although not exclusively – on European societies through the lens of ethnographic studies but also of other perspectives including history, sociology, political science, geography, and literary studies.

Ethnologie Française publishes four issues per year. The paper version is published and distributed by the Presses Universitaires de France. Issues published since 2001 are accessible online via the CAIRN portal, with a 36-month moving wall, and older issues can be consulted on the JSTOR platform.
