Starting from a project on Croatian returnees in the 1990s, the article evokes the anthropologist’s dilemma in that she is herself a Croatian involved in local society and society in general. It brings to light the profoundly ambiguous character of fieldwork and its rendering in a society that is subjected to an authoritarian regime under which scientific activity cannot avoid uncontrollable political interpretations both by the group being studied and by the surrounding society.
