Paradoxes of Group Work: The Volkswagen Factory in Hanover

By Delphine Corteel
English

Group work is a form of work organization that is specific for German factories that has been highly influenced by trade-unions. Management and trade union present it as a radical innovation that questions the foundation of the Taylorist work organization and the conception of workers' work. However, workers of the vw factory in Hannover give an original understanding of the new organization that invalidates the definition of “group work”. They strictly distinguish the group (a new form of supervision based on an original normative system) from work, the conception of which is not affected by the new organization.
