Gypsy Families and the Protection of Privacy

By Claire Cossée
English

Gipsy families preserve the in-group/out-group frontier by putting interdicts on intimacy and more especially on women's one. The group regulates its members' intimate practices and thus controls everybody's role. Considering that these interdicts are not to be revealed “outside”, what does happen then when a Gipsy woman reveals part of these secrets in a book and when, moreover, a theatre group (to which the author belongs) stages them?
