The notion of stigma, though pertinent for extreme situations, is not sufficient to account for loose relationships that make the life frame of homeless people. Deviant behaviours observed in public spaces are not induced by “desocialization” or madness, but by a latent resistance resulting from precarious situations and from reactions of passers-by to whom “incivilities” and the sight of poverty are intolerable.
