Migration and Flexibility: The Search for Solutions to the Demands of Religious Minorities in Switzerland

By Joanna Pfaff-Czarnecka
English

By observing some ritual prescriptions, members of religious minorities draw attention to themselves in their “host country.” In Europe many non-Christians who are often confronted with incomprehension, suspicion or even curiosity claim freedom of religious expression. Religious minorities resort more and more to court to claim special rights. On two examples taken in the canton of Zurich, - the exemption from swimming course and the claim for a dignified burial -, the author questions the social changes resulting from non-Christian immigration. The right to freedom of religious expression for the immigrants requires a flexibility on the part of both the institutions of the host country and the immigrants themselves.
