Albanian Emigration from Kosovo to Switzerland: The Unpredictable Evolution of Migration Plans

In the year 2000, 150 000 to 200 000 Albanians from ex-Yugoslavia were living in Switzerland. Most of them were originating from Kosovo. The present article highlights the social context and plans of this population over a period of thirty years corresponding to their progressive arrival in Switzerland. At the beginning young Albanians generally emigrated from Kosovo to find a seasonal work. After having experienced dramatic situations during these past ten years, Albanian immigrants meet with less difficulties today in Switzerland thanks to the economic revival and the end of the exodus.
