An anthropology of Reunion Island cannot simply rely on the concepts of assimilation or metissage. This article tries to analyze three different processes which are in continuous opposition to each other: acculturation, creolization and cultural reinventions. It emphasizes that Reunion society is a complex object whose anthropological study requires to challenge categories traditionally applied to the understanding of plural societies.
