Life in Prison in Guadeloupe: Reputation and Rivalry among Young Delinquents

The reputation of men whose behaviours are orientated to values that praise virility is studied. Whatever the acts that may have been committed, their social impact depends on the comments they provoke. Reputation implies rivalry, since if it is acquired within a peer group, it also develops against these peers. Jealousy drives those who lack prestige to humiliate those who have it. Young delinquents care particularly about their reputation and respect they command. Incarceration increases the importance of these values and the brutality of rivalries and tends to deteriorate the relationships between young delinquents.
