An extraordinarily abundant number of studies are devoted to the patronal festival of Barjols evoking the sacrifice of an ox. How did they develop? Do they stand up to an examination of empirical data? Are they rigorously documented interpretations or overinterpretations? Both a field study and the analysis of historical sources enable us to answer these questions.
