Creating a Local Identity in a New Town: The Example of Cergy-Pontoise
The Memory of New Towns
By Caroline de Saint PierreEnglish
The example of the new town of Cergy-Pontoise shows how decision-makers and town-dwellers fabricate a local identity. Several century-old towns are not the only ones to be able to give meaning to spaces and to be inhabited in the full sense of the word. When tracing the narratives which have been produced simultaneously with the town and are going on through time, – audiovisual narratives included, which are central to our society but are not often taken into account –, we can point out an urban singularity that could also be called the spirit of the place.
