On the basis of interacting behaviours of various scattered members of a Corsican family the author shows how a correspondence reveals the functionning of a community and the dynamics of its historicity. This correspondence of a Corsican villager who took part in 1900 in the French colonial campaigns represents a Corsican village monograph of the turn of the 19th century, written from a Madagascan military post.
