The “Split Country”: Recomposition of Indigenous Territorialities in an Amazonian Reservation

Inhabitants of a space under special legislation are led to readjust their relationships with territory as a function of the regulations and representations imposed on them from outside. Various aspects of these readjustments are examined among the Cayapo Indians of a Brazilian Amazonian reservation. The appropriation of new tools and the use of extended networks enable them to maintain a singular territoriality despite space reduction.
