The traditional costume is part of Ukrainian cultural identity. Its evolution and ethnic meaning are presented here in their regional and local variants using a rigorous descriptive method. The analysis is enriched with a comparative study of other cultural traditions in Europe, the Slavic world and the Near East. The variants of the traditional costume as daily wear are stabilized by the early 19th century. Later on, it is no longer perceived as an utilitarian daily object and takes a symbolic value.
