During World War II 70 % of the collections of Ukrainian museums disappeared (sent to Germany and Rumania) : they were evacuated by the Soviet army and destroyed by bombings, transferred by the forces of occupation or plundered during the Germans’ retreat. Although it is difficult to draw up an inventory of the losses (since museum documentation was lost, too), the author takes stock of the Ukrainian cultural heritage.
