Alone and with Another: Daily Life of Co-tenants in Quebec

Territories in Question: Routes in Territories
By Madeleine Pastinelli
English

The phenomenon of co-tenancy has known an important development in Québec for several years. A field study conducted in 1999 and 2000 among co-tenants in a popular area of Québec City permits us to understand this new way of living, of organizing one’s daily life and negotiating one’s relation to the other. This short-lived grouping of people who have no close relations to each other gives rise to a continuous interplay in the construction of a home of their own, consisting alternately in coming closer to the other and keeping him at a distance. The author explores the manner of living “together” and “separately” at the same time according to strange configurations either composed of men or women only, or mixed. This ethnography discusses concrete points: space sharing, conception of a home of one’s own, sharing of household products, housework, and daily activities.
