By evoking the characteristics of photographical images this article aims at evaluating their logic and impact in social sciences. Photographs indeed are full of signs that can reveal numerous details of social life, but their scientific use requires a methodology, in particular concerning their interpretation by means of descriptive commentaries and silhouette drawings.
