Corsican Militant Memories in the Niolu Valley
Territories in Question: Routes in Territories
By Pierre BertonciniEnglish
In Corsica, graffiti help disseminate the discourses of nationalist identities. This ideology develops on the 18th century independence period – shown as a model – and social relationships based on the vendetta codes. In 2001, commemoration of an event which took place in 1774 fostered specific graffiti in the Niolu Valley. They reveal various conflicts, opposing not only Corsican nationalists to the French State but also rival sections who all fight to appropriate the memory of Paoli.
