Folklore Study in Sweden: A Parent Discipline?

This article analyzes both the history and current tendencies of folklore study, which in Sweden is regarded as a special area within the broader discipline of ethnology. The particular focus is on the often difficult and contentious relationship between folkloristics and ethnology, and it is argued here that the relationship between these two areas of research has had a profound impact on Swedish ethnology as a whole, giving it some of its distinctive qualities.
