Abstract

This paper discusses the crisis caused by the introduction of the bird-flu virus (H5N1HP) in the French region of the Dombes, in spring 2006. It examines how the disease affected people in many different ways, calling into question both social relationships and relationships with nature and animals. Infectious and infecting birds carry an explosive social charge which reveals the tensions marking today’s French rural societies and reaching further afield.
