The Song of Natives

Territories in Question: Routes in Territories
Music along the Alpine Border
By Cyril Isnart
English

In Tende, a village close to the French-Italian border, men come to sing together in bars during local festivals. Thought of as a collective and festive emblematic practice, singing is also linked to the two local kinds of dance. This set of customs is a legacy of the ancestors who came from the other side of the border in the beginning of the twentieth century. This text tries to highlight the musical and social dimensions of this practice, which are both the symptom and the revelation of Tende’s recent evolution.
