The Winds of Languedoc: An Experiential Approach

By Jean-Pierre Destand
English

The Languedoc seaboard is the location of a vast range of winds, from breezes to galeforce. The blowing of these winds establishes, allows, and imposes certain habits and practices. The present article addresses certain ways of speaking, living and naming the windy element. The aim is not to present an exhaustive inventory of winds and weather. What the article seeks to do is, above all, to highlight a certain facet of a meteorological culture. To do so, it adopts an ethnographical approach in which the store of maritime knowledge is examined.
