Among the various motives for travelling, the quest for one’s “origins” has been prominent for decades among descendants of migrant families. This memory-oriented initiative, encouraged by the former countries of emigration, prompts the issue of the forms of recognition between the relative who is travelling back and the relative of the branch that stayed. The initial contact is a decisive moment to feel – and not always control – the tension between presence and absence.
