Democracy and Decentralization in Africa: A Mauritanian Example

Recent development studies have given considerable new impetus to French political anthropology. While this contribution is often overlooked, this article will attempt to demonstrate the interest of using socio-anthropological approaches to development by examing the challenges of decentralization and democratization in Mauritania. This will involve the analysis of local government and public spaces. Special attention will be given to social categories whose study is crucial for understanding the stakes and impact of development policies.
