Strong Local and Family Roots : a Case Study of DoleThis study of Dole (Franche-Comté), conducted along the lines set by the kass project, highlights the contrast between intergenerational ties where solidarity is taken to be “natural” and relations between kin of the same generation for whom support is more a matter of choice. Above all, it shows how important it is for family networks to be located in actual places. Generally speaking, the households investigated put great emphasis on geographical proximity in kinship relations founded on local attachments and the family’s roots in a house. With this in mind, they make few demands on public resources when they need help, since their first resort is to the family network.
