Living in Permanent Exile: Egyptian-born Jews in France

By Michèle Baussant
English

This paper deals with the memory of the Jews of Egypt, after their exile to France during the second half of the 20th century. It examines some of the literary, autobiographical or historical papers or books they produced as specific forms of reconstructing the past. These productions are explored from a specific angle, the relationships between several narrative identities: those which someone elaborates to give sense to his or her life and those of collective histories elaborated within the framework of interpersonal relations. Three main themes are highlighted: Jewishness, the Egyptian origin and the relationship to languages such as French and Arabic.
