Playing in school canteens

By Géraldine ComorettoEnglish
This article proposes an examination of the diversity of children’s games observed in school canteens during an ethnographic study conducted in three primary schools in the Paris region. The various categories of games—with food, canteen equipment or toys—illustrate the way children play during school meals. Playing in the canteen may either facilitate transgression or serve as a way of taking possession of this space-time, or it may be used as a means of fitting into the peer group. The use of play in school canteens allows for new perspectives on children’s interactions.
