The Burden of Threat: How Do Undocumented Migrants Evaluate their Everyday Risk of Being Deported?

The lives of undocumented migrants in France are deeply affected by the insecurity inherent in their legal status. On a daily basis they are forced to evaluate a range of risks including arrest or expulsion in order to avoid them as best they can. This article, which follows one undocumented individual’s application to become regularized at a French prefecture, reveals the difficulty of evaluating risk in an environment in which anything can be—or can become—a threat.
