The Discourse on Blackness in Israel. Evolution and Overlaps
By Gabriella Djerrahian
English
In this article I examine three reconfigurations of globalized American blackness that occurred in the past 30 years by three stigmatized populations living in Israel: Palestinians who are citizens of Israel, the Mizrahim, and, more recently, Ethiopian Jews. Evolving notions of blackness are juxtaposed upon current claims made by Palestinian rappers living in Israel who compete with marginalized black Jews to get the title of “real” blacks, in other words the underdogs of Israel.
