From Denial to Mobilization. Living next to a Landfill Site (the Case Study of Vienne, France)

By Claudia Cirelli
English

Analyzing the mobilization of the inhabitants living in the neighborhood of a small town of Vienne (Isère) against the landfill site expansion, this paper examines one of the ways in which the issue of waste in the urban spaces is expressed. The rejection of the proximity of waste treatment facilities (incinerators, landfill waste disposal site, etc.) is at the heart of conflicts that seem to become widespread. The article shows that the relations of the local people with the waste disposal site changes over time, from a proximity individually chosen and supported to its collective rejection, and that this transformation is part of more general environmental concerns in which waste becomes a risk-laden object.
