Shaping uncertainty: Medical knowledge and the transition from childhood to adolescence

An earlier onset of puberty and medical discourse about precocious puberty has led to an alarm being raised by a hysterical press, and through websites and the media: childhood is becoming shorter and shorter, and physical signs are said to demonstrate this. Such a social trajectory—whose development stages cling to the concepts of age and abnormality—risks exposure and the emergence of the notion of precocious sexuality reveals the propensity of the medical field to frame a labile and unstable process within a medical category.
