From Sardinia to Piedmont, recipes for the construction of an enlarged family

By Caterina Di Pasquale
English

The life story of Ersilia Melis—who was born in 1927 in Armungia (Sardinia) and lived most of her life in Turin, Piedmont—describes a composite everyday world where the traditional family farm model and the social role of women as wife and mother have undergone changes. The author describes and analyzes these changes and how they are reflected in Ersilia’s know-how. The aim is to show how cooking skills can embody the relationships between Ersilia and her two families: her birth family and the family with which she worked from 1947 to 1985.
