William Wadé Harris

A prophet of the end of time
By André Mary
English

Harris was an African Prophet from Liberia who, in the years 1913-1914, predicted the imminent coming of the “End of Time.” He succeeded in baptizing thousands of Ivoirian and Ghanean peoples where Missionaries had failed to do so. This figure of exception, rather than of subversion, embodies all the ambivalent aspects of the Christian, educated and “civilized” African man, converted to pan-Africanist ideas, and returned to the paganism of his Fathers  . His entire history, constructed through legendary narratives and related by recent historiographical sources, is made up of an accumulation of paradoxes and “incompatible syntheses,” which were full of promises for the Black People.
