Father Paolo Dall’Oglio. Voluntary Hostage by Love of Islam
A voluntary hostage through a love of Islam
By Manoël PénicaudEnglish
This article traces the singular trajectory of the Italian Jesuit Paolo Dall’oglio (1954-), which defines himself as “lover of Islam and believer in Jesus”. After founding in Syria a place of inculturation in a monastery dedicated to the Abrahamic hospitality, he was expelled during the civil war. In 2012, he returned clandestinely in Syria and became hostage of the ISIS organization as he wanted to free Muslims prisonners, in fidelity to his vow of badaliya (substitution).
