This article discusses the turning of Huautla de Jiménez, a Mazatec country town, into a small Indian capital, recently bestowed with the tourism label of pueblo mágico in Mexico. As much as this process seems contrary to the former dichotomy between Indians and the capital, it sheds light on the changes in rural areas and on the relations between the Indians and the national society in the context of globalization.
