Learning professional football
By Nicolas Damont, Olivier PégardEnglish
Based on an ethnographic investigation concerning young apprentice footballers—mainly children from migrant families (Maghreb, West Africa, DOM-TOM)—led by one of the authors at the Paris-Saint-Germain training center, this article shows how the making of a player has to be studied both on and off the pitch. The research reveals that the black phenotype, which forms part of the process of learning football masculinity, is not viewed in a negative light.
