What is to become of the republican cadis?
A study of the reconfiguration of the cadial institution in Mayotte
By Myriam Hachimi-Alaoui, Élise LemercierEnglish
The standardization of the law applying to Mayotte was at the heart of the recent process of departmentalization in this overseas territory. This article describes the reconfigurations of the place granted to “cadis,” Muslim magistrates in Mayotte. Their role, institutionalized under colonization, has been maintained since the 2000s without being clearly defined. Since 2015, the Cadis have been, against all expectations, involved in a process of rehabilitation. Based on a field study between 2012 and 2016, this article will focus on this singular trend reversal.
