“20 años sin justicia”

This paper compares two public commemorations of the twentieth anniversary of the antisemitic AMIA bombing in Buenos Aires on July 18, 1994. The purpose is to show how each commemoration helps redefine perceptions about the role of the Jewish population in Argentinian society. While the victims’ association Memoria Activa seeks to develop lateral relationships with other anticorruption and human rights movements, Jewish institutions demonstrate a vertical relationship with the political establishment and the state, insisting on the state’s duty to protect the Jewish population.
