From informal networks to managerialization: A women’s association in (post-)revolutionary Tunisia

By Sélima Kebaïli
English

Based on an ethnographic study combining observations, interviews, and archives, this article analyzes the construction and transformation, from 2011 to 2016, of an Islamic women’s association in transitional Tunisia. The members of the association, who share an experience of anti-Islamic repression under Ben Ali’s regime, undertook a process of managerialization after entering the transitional justice process. Their search for access to international funding sources such as the United Nations influenced the association’s strategies, leading to the political neutralization of their Islamic identity.
