The organization of domestic workers in the wake of the Egyptian revolution

In Egypt, the years 2012 and 2013 saw the unprecedented emergence of two organizations (an association and a trade union) that advocated for domestic workers’ rights. Supported by local NGOs and funded by international donors, these two organizations were a place of socialization for domestic workers. While the forms of engagement varied—some expressing their grievances publicly, others participating discretely—all of the domestic workers were transformed by this experience, acquiring greater knowledge of the political sphere or gaining new critical dispositions enabling them to challenge the sexual order in their private life and/or in the public sphere.
