The struggle of women workers during the Tunisian revolution: From resistance to disenchantment

By Sarah Barrières
English

A unique labor struggle emerged in (post-)revolutionary Tunisia involving female trade unionists and workers in a subsidiary of a French multinational corporation. The period provided numerous opportunities for women’s protest movements to expand in ways that would have been unforeseeable in ordinary times. Engaging in radical forms of protest, workers and trade unionists ostensibly transgressed gender norms in their activities. Although this period provoked changes in gender boundaries, these ultimately proved short-lived as, when the struggle subsided, women returned to their former roles in the home and the factory. Some women have in fact subsequently experienced losses of independence and deteriorations in their working conditions.
