Sexual liberation or “pressure to soothe these gentlemen?” Women’s perspectives on the 1968 period in France

A number of French women have expressed ambivalence concerning the gendered outcomes of the 1968 period in France. Their reflections suggest the need for a critical reappraisal of the ways in which a so-called revolutionary project about sexuality and love ultimately renewed androcentric norms. This article seeks to adopt a “bottom-up” approach in order to understand the outcomes of this period of crisis in gender relations, which was marked by the opening of new possibilities for women, closely followed by the restoration of subjugation. In particular, the article analyzes sexual codes in light of women’s affective dispositions.
