Manage “the spirit of costume”: learn and embrace tradition in the pays d’Arles
By Elise Marcia
English
Abstract : The traditional woman’s costume in the pays d’Arles has become increasingly complex since the 1970s. Its form, colors and fabrics are established by local historians and are the subject of rigorous transmission. The Arlésiennes who wear it today are very attached to it and are invested in its particularization. Around this costume socialization, learning and initiations are played, especially in the context of sewing groups specially dedicated. The youngers are guided in their journey by the elders, while they try, on their side, to take ownership of the traditional local dress.
